The proposal is to renovate and extend the existing Mackie Mayor Market building, built in 1860, into the new home of the Manchester County Records Office. The original listed building would be restored maintaining all its original cast iron columns and roof trusses to become a multi storey reading room. The new archive building would be enclosed in a precast concrete south facing wall whiles the north façade would be enclosed in translucent insulation panels. The two buildings are linked by a glass atrium which acts as the main reception and entrance space.
